Pottery – First Mesa
Historically, the Hopi people have produced beautiful styles of pottery beginning with the ancient work found at Awatovi and Sikyatki. These beautiful works have given inspiration and visual inspiration to modern potters including Tawnya Mahle and Nolan Youvella who are from First Mesa. Both of these potters produce a unique style apart from those produced by potters from surrounding villages. The variation in style can be traced to the types of clay found near the respective villages and in some respects, the firing method(s) utilized (Fewkes, 1919).
